A call has been opened for one postdoctoral research
fellowship in the framework of operation “RL2 - (Bio) Chemical
Engineering: Multi-Scale Approaches for Sustainable Environment and
Health” do Programa Integrado “LEPAE/CEFT – reinforcing R&D
engineering competences in Energy, Environment & Health”, with the
reference NORTE-07-0124-FEDER-000025, financed by Fundo Europeu de
Desenvolvimento Regional – FEDER (Community Support Framework), through
Programa Operacional do Norte - ON2 (North Portugal Regional Operational
Programme) and through national funds from FCT/MEC (PIDDAC).The signature of the research fellowship is pending on the financial approval of the operation in the agreed terms and formalization of the financing agreement.
Job description:
Scientific Area: Chemical and Environmental Engineering
Admission requirements: PhD concluded until December 31, 2013, in any area of concern for the work plan (e.g. Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry). For admission it is clearly beneficial to have experience in the use of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for water or wastewater treatment, soil remediation, air decontamination, or related areas.
Work plan: The work to be developed is part of research line 2 - (Bio) Chemical Engineering: Multi-Scale Approaches for Sustainable Environment and Health, Activity 2.5. Technologies for Improving Water and Air Quality Aiming the Protection of the Environment and Health.
The selected candidate should develop activities in some of the areas of expertise of LEPABE related to AOPs, e.g.: i) homogeneous advanced oxidation processes (e.g. Fenton or photo-Fenton oxidation); ii) heterogeneous AOPs (e.g. making use of activated carbons or other materials to support the active phase); iii) integration of AOPs with biological processes.
It is also of importance that the candidate brings new inputs in these topics, and promotes development of new related projects (e.g., degradation of liquid and gaseous streams by AOPs, disinfection, etc.).

Workplace: The work will be developed at LEPABE, Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy, in the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering -University of Porto, under the scientific supervision of Professor Luis Miguel Madeira.
Fellowship duration and Activities Regime: the fellowship will have the duration of 12 months, expected to begin on February, 2014, on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable until the end of the project. The signature of the research fellowship is pending on the financial approval of the operation in the agreed terms and formalization of the financing agreement.
It is expected that afterwards the candidate might be in position to apply for a FCT fellowship.
Value of the monthly maintenance grant: The value of the grant is 1495,00€ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).
Selection methods: The selection methods will be based on curriculum evaluation (60%) and interview of candidates whose CV meets the requirements for admission (40%).
