Core Network Engineer - INS00005V
As the Core Network Engineer you will design, build, configure and support the deployment of the services and the core platforms infrastructures in scope in Vodafone Core Network & Operations Department.
You will be accountable for the day to day engineering tasks of Vodafone’s central and shared hosted network services running in the data centre environments of the department. These services offer complex voice and data products & service to Vodafone’s customers around the globe.
Each role will cover one of the following areas:
- Core Platform – Circuit Switched Network
- Core Platform – Packet Switched Network
- Core Platform &Services – Messaging
- Core Platform – Cloud & Shared
- IP LAN &Service Design/ Data Centre Network Engineering

The role of the Core Network Engineer will be a key position within Vodafone’s Core Network & Operations Department based in Lisbon, Portugal.
As the Core Network Engineer your main responsibilities will involve:
• Support the Customer & Demand Management function in the definition of clear customer requirements
• Managing the engineering cycle of capability and service delivery (Low Level Design, Build, Test, Go live)
• Actively supporting definition of test strategy, test scope and test cases. Delivering platforms to the testing team that meet the agreed criteria for the Ready for Testing milestone.
• Supporting on configuration management processes and tools for the platforms in scope
• Translating business forecasts into platform ones to produce a platform view of the capacity required to meet business needs.
• Designing and delivering upgrades to the platforms’ capacity as required, so that there is sufficient available capacity to meet the business needs, but not over-dimensioned.
• Defining, measuring and report KPIs to ensure the efficient use of the capacity in the network.
• Contributing to the vendors’ balanced scorecard to measure their ability to meet Vodafone’s requirements for their products.
• Delivering technical consultancy to our internal customers, as the Vodafone expert in the platforms and services in scope
As the Core Network Engineer your skills and experience will ideally include:
• Degree in electrical / electronic / telecommunications, Software, Computer engineering
• Profound experience in Network and Service development and implementation ideally in a Telco environment
• Track record of technical design and network dimensioning in a telecoms or IT services environment
• IP Engineering Knowledge
• Proven deep technical skills in at least one of these fields:
o Circuit-Switched/CSDB architectures
o Packet-Switched core platform architectures
o Cloud Based Infrastructure and Shared Core Platforms
o Messaging Core Platforms (including MMS, Internet & WAP technologies)
o Knowledge and understanding of network architectures and tools including: MPLS, IP, Ethernet, BGP, OSPF, Cisco HW and SW (IOS/CATOS/NX-OS), Security protocols (IPSEC/TLS/EAP), Firewalls, Load balancers, QoS, IP Multicast, WLAN technologies
• Proven experience and attitude to work in multinational and multicultural teams in a complex large company and matrix environments
• Good degree of autonomy and ability to self-start on complex deliverables in ambiguous situations
• Problem solving skills
• Excellent communication skills, ability to explain, enlighten, educate and above all engage and influence stakeholders.
• English skills: Very good (technical) written, Good spoken
• Experience in acceptance and troubleshooting activities
• Availability to short travels
